Africa Rising 2016 is a positive family-oriented event created to uplift the continent and showcase World Music & Dance as well as Reggae and Jazz acts from Africa and the Diaspora. The event was hosted by conscious and legendary actor Isaiah Washington. He recently became the first African-American to become a Sierra-Leonese citizen on the sole basis of a DNA test. The event took place at the Ford Theatres which offered a scenic stage backdrop with its open roof, amidst Hollywood. The headliners were African Reggae Ambassador & Grammy-nominated Rocky Dawuni and legendary Marie Daulne, half of Zap Mama. The Festival also featured popular local acts such as Wondem, an Ethiopian-influenced Jazz ensemble led by Dexter Story, as well as some of the best West African and Afro-Cuban dancers and drummers in the city of Los Angeles. The event was a definite success as the venue was nearly full and the crowd had great vibes. Rocky Dawuni’s high energy, Zap Mama’s sultry’s voice, Wondem’s musical virtuosity, the great dancing and drumming, as well as Daniel Bambaata Marley’s guest appearance (Ziggy’s son) made the audience rejoice in clamor. Also Parking was only $5 in Hollywood out of all places.
