SHAKTI FEST, JOSHUA TREE (CA), MAY 10TH-14TH 2018
In Joshua Tree, CA when Shakti Festival opens your heart to awareness, something inimitably felt begins to stir. Arrived at Shakti, full of the savory love and excitement that one become accustomed to…but couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.
Chants, Drumming, Sound Baths, Mantras, Gongs, Dancing, CBD, good vibes, Conscious Food/Elixirs, Artistry, Meditation, Eco Apparels, Crystals & Gems, all stretching into the Unknown permeates the ether at Shakti Fest. Everywhere one turns, see villages, students of life; vibrant smiling faces greeting and encouraging to enjoy the Shakti vibe, celebrate evolutions of life, relinquish self gifts and share in other’s gifts. But still, something was missing…
Kirtan lovers, ecstatic dance fans and even those unfamiliar with reverential music all raving about Shakti being an One Stop Luv Fest. Track after track, session after session, back bend after downward dog, breath after exhalation, the festival rocked visionaries like breatharian Michael Brian Baker, musician activist Fantuzzi, lyrical artist MC Yogi, Shelly the Hoop dancer, etc…heartfelt presences and innovative musical stylings to ancient mantras of love, medicine and healing. The feels were warm and fuzzy, yet incomplete.
Wind stormed teachers, sun-kissed yogis, sisterly gurus, all offering love nods, heart hugs and namastes all day into the night, under the stars. Even the Joshua trees flex like Aerial yoga, breathe & wave Aho from all directions dancing amid the live kirtan music…sacred ground for sacred space. There was that feeling again…
As the closing ceremony concluded, hearts were topped off with love..and then it became apparent. What was missing…the reflective heterogeneity of the diverse world we are attempting to represent and connect. It is easy to proclaim we are all one when we all look alike.
Hm? Now, of course, you know that the womb hood, perpetual evolution, love and inclusion vibe that is so thoroughly practiced at Shakti Fest would never, ever, intentionally exclude anyone, especially not those many of the practices are derived from. However, perhaps it is time for all of us to increase our efforts of agape and comprisal to ensure that more members of ethnically diverse groups are invited, included and celebrated. Om Shakti, om Shaaakti!! Ommmm…

2018 PAN AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL, LOS ANGELES (CA), FEBRUARY 8TH-19TH 2018
The 26th Pan African Film Festival fell once again during our crucial Black History Month, where we have the opportunity via a plethora of events and celebrations to connect Africa and its diaspora, and more importantly educate and inform the masses. The Pan African Film Festival encompassed all of these various activities at the Baldwin-Hills Crenshaw Mall, in the heart of South Central Los Angeles. Film and Documentaries from Africa and the Diaspora were shown to avid and conscious spectators, some of whom brought their children and families. The film festival offers spectators rare opportunities to ask the directors and actors questions, as well as offer amateur or professional critiques. My personal favorites this year were “Burkina Rising” discussing the life and death of the revolutionary Thomas Sankara and the comical Nigerian Love Story “Red Hibiscus”. Of course, the Centerpiece of the Festival was the now iconic “Black Panther” movie which was shown a day prior to its national release to a sold-out audience. The “Black Panther” theme was recurrent throughout the entire festival, as nightly food (Southern & Caribbean) and dance celebrations occurred, to the sounds of modern and classic music from Africa and the Diaspora. Vendors came from all over the US to sell African goods in the mall area, where an African-themed Fashion and Talent show also took place. The Pan African Film Festival truly lived up to its name as it was a definite success as usual, in its mission of unity, education and entertainment.
There were notable appearances by Mario Van Peebles, Louis Gossett Jr, Isaiah Washington & Family and Senegalese actress Amelie M’Baye Lead actress of “Borders/Frontieres” which won the “Best Narrative” award this year.

2017 LOS ANGELES MARATHON, LOS ANGELES (CA), MARCH 19TH 2017
Kenya won the Los Angeles Marathon for the second time in three years, with Elisha Barno and Hellen Jepkurgat respectively placing first in the men’s and women’s events in two hours, 11 minutes and 52 seconds and two hours, 34 minutes and 23 seconds. Barno defeated three Kenyan countrymen: 2015 winner Daniel Limo, Willy Koitile and 2016 Los Angeles Marathon champion Weldon.
I was fortunate to participate in this Marathon, both as a runner and a reporter, for the second time since 2015 and beating my previous time by 16 minutes. This Marathon allows me to rediscover by running foot the beautiful city of Los Angeles and iconic surrounding areas: Pasadena, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Westwood, Brentwood, before finally crossing the Finish Line on scenic Ocean Avenue in Santa Monica.

2017 PAN AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL, LOS ANGELES (CA), FEBRUARY 9TH-20TH 2017
February 9th 2017 marked the 25th anniversary of the Pan African Film Festival which took place in Los Angeles, CA during Black History Month. This Festival is a great asset for aspiring and renowned filmmakers from Africa & The Diaspora, as it helps promote their work and also enables them to network worldwide. PAFF’s Executive Director Ayuko Babu also serves as a permanent member of the jury of the annual Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA), headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria.
Opening Night at the Director’s Guild of America in West Hollywood, showcased Nick Cannon’s latest movie “King of The Dancehall” filmed in the US & Jamaica. Pillars of the Black Film industry Danny Glover and Alfre Woodard were in attendance and were honored for their tremendous contributions to the movie industry in general. Actress Alfre Woodard was also featured as a guest of honor in a live 120 minute conversation where she discussed her legacy and work as one of the most prominent African-American actresses on TV and Film.
The Festival incorporates Art and Fashion work and vendors in the Mall setting of
Baldwin-Hills Crenshaw Plaza.
A highlight of the festival would be the showing of Kemtiyu, documentary on the life and work of Egyptologist Cheikh Anta Diop. Cheikh Anta Diop was instrumental in providing scientific and linguistic proof that the original Egyptians were Black and culturally connected to the rest of Black Africa. The documentary makes mention of my father Pathe Diagne who invited his colleague Cheikh Anta to speak on these issues at his symposium in 1986 at the University of Dakar now named Cheikh Anta Diop University. Another highlight is “Everything But A Man” relation the romantic involvement of a professional African-American woman (Monica Calhoun) and an illegal Haitian immigrant (Jimmy Jean Louis); funny yet bringing to light love despite cultural differences. Closing Night featured a documentary on the enigmatic and reserved Saxophonist John Coltrane “Chasing Trane”, much to the delight of the elders of the local community.
