SHAKTI FEST, JOSHUA TREE (CA), MAY 10TH-14TH 2018
In Joshua Tree, CA when Shakti Festival opens your heart to awareness, something inimitably felt begins to stir. Arrived at Shakti, full of the savory love and excitement that one become accustomed to…but couldn’t shake the feeling that something was missing.
Chants, Drumming, Sound Baths, Mantras, Gongs, Dancing, CBD, good vibes, Conscious Food/Elixirs, Artistry, Meditation, Eco Apparels, Crystals & Gems, all stretching into the Unknown permeates the ether at Shakti Fest. Everywhere one turns, see villages, students of life; vibrant smiling faces greeting and encouraging to enjoy the Shakti vibe, celebrate evolutions of life, relinquish self gifts and share in other’s gifts. But still, something was missing…
Kirtan lovers, ecstatic dance fans and even those unfamiliar with reverential music all raving about Shakti being an One Stop Luv Fest. Track after track, session after session, back bend after downward dog, breath after exhalation, the festival rocked visionaries like breatharian Michael Brian Baker, musician activist Fantuzzi, lyrical artist MC Yogi, Shelly the Hoop dancer, etc…heartfelt presences and innovative musical stylings to ancient mantras of love, medicine and healing. The feels were warm and fuzzy, yet incomplete.
Wind stormed teachers, sun-kissed yogis, sisterly gurus, all offering love nods, heart hugs and namastes all day into the night, under the stars. Even the Joshua trees flex like Aerial yoga, breathe & wave Aho from all directions dancing amid the live kirtan music…sacred ground for sacred space. There was that feeling again…
As the closing ceremony concluded, hearts were topped off with love..and then it became apparent. What was missing…the reflective heterogeneity of the diverse world we are attempting to represent and connect. It is easy to proclaim we are all one when we all look alike.
Hm? Now, of course, you know that the womb hood, perpetual evolution, love and inclusion vibe that is so thoroughly practiced at Shakti Fest would never, ever, intentionally exclude anyone, especially not those many of the practices are derived from. However, perhaps it is time for all of us to increase our efforts of agape and comprisal to ensure that more members of ethnically diverse groups are invited, included and celebrated. Om Shakti, om Shaaakti!! Ommmm…

DAARA J, DAKAR (SENEGAL), DECEMBER 24TH 2016
My husband and I are currently visiting his native Senegal from Philadelphia. On Christmas Eve, we had the opportunity to meet the world-renowned Ndongo D and Faada Freddy from The Daara J Family, right before their concert at the Daniel Sorano Theater in Dakar. Both artists are undeniably very spiritual and talented. Music is their weapon and they only use it to promote Peace & Love in the world. I was very excited to just converse with them and even while doing so, Faada Freddy couldn’t resist singing. Ndongo D was very “cool & calm” as most rappers are, and also so humble. We discussed many different topics including health and my favorite Daara J songs. Towards the end of the conversation, they both promised to put on the best show for their fans, which they accomplished to the fullest extent. The Daniel Sorano Theater was at full-compassity and tickets were sold out, the streets were also packed with cars. The concert could still be heard clearly outside by the fans who were unable to get in. The performance was nothing less than awe-inspiring, brilliant, cool, explosive and magnificent. When Daara J Family is in your city or near, you should definitely come out and show support. They are the Best! Their music is available on I-Tunes, Amazon and stores nationwide (USA).

32ND ANNUAL REGGAE ON THE RIVER, FRENCH’S CAMP (GARBERVILLE, CA), AUGUST 4TH-7TH 2016
Reggae on The River has improved much to my pleasant surprise, proving the adage; given that it is the longest running Reggae festival in US history in its 32nd year. This, per current staff, is due to the new influx of younger generations taking on organizational tasks. Unpaved roads and other areas were seemingly ready to receive thousands of campers and their vehicles, as early as Thursday morning. The “beach” area, upstream of the river, was turned into a gigantic sound system/after-party venue, which in turn contributed to its cleanliness instead of being polluted and swamped by campers. Eclectic art craft and food vendors were present as usual.
The festival featured an international line-up ranging from Dub Reggae legends Soul Syndicate to Roots Dancehall legends Sizzla Kalonji, Anthony B and Sister Carol, from Malian Blues Princess Fatoumata Diawara to Algerian Reggae-fusioned The Democratoz. Dancehall Legend Yellowman performed with his daughter K’reema. There was a plethora of promising newcomers: Protoje, Jah9, Jesse Royal, No-Maddz, New Kingston, Melekul (Sizzla’s son), Keznamdi etc…But the Festival was most certainly marked by the return of Sizzla Kalonji after an eight-year absence from the US , due to visa issues. Sizzla delivered a great performance punctuated with classic 90s and early 2000s hits, much to the delight of the crowd that sang along. Sizzla professed his gratitude to the Mateel Community organization throughout the show and post press conference, since they were solely responsible for the reactivation of his visa. And who’s better at closing than the highly-energetic/human rights activist Anthony B who literally rocked the crowd. The 32nd annual Reggae on the river was a success in reference to its organization, the live performances and attendance.

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016, BOONVILLE (CA), JUNE 17TH-19TH 2016
The 2016 Sierra Nevada World Music Festival started on the wrong note on Friday June 17th as Lee Perry and Don Carlos’ shows were postponed until the next day due to rain. However, the weather on Saturday and Sunday was mild and sunny to the delight of the concert-goers who drove from various parts of the country to the very remote and rural area of Boonville (CA). The venue (Mendocino County Fairgrounds) was packed with novice and seasoned campers, as well as one-day concert attendees. The Festival, though Reggae-based, was very eclectic as usual and boasted musicians from North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and Asia. The format was as in the past: Shows during the day and dancehall at night with Bay area and Kingston sound systems playing classic tunes and the latest hits. There were also food, clothing and art vendors who conducted business amidst a Brazilian Carnival-like atmostphere as Samba dancers and drummers marched around the venue. The three-day festival was closed by Alpha Blondy who delivered a great performance where the message of World Peace was pronounced and clear as the crowd roared in agreement.

ANGELIQUE KIDJO, LOS ANGELES (CA), MAY 21st 2016
Angelique Kidjo performed differently this time around in Los Angeles, in
the more intimate setting of the Luckman Theater which was at
full-capacity. This concert was acoustic as she only utilized a guitar
player, and local drum phenomenon Magatte Sow (Djembe, Sabar & Congas) who
always tours with her when needed. Angelique Kidjo was mostly interacting
with the audience, speaking about her childhood in Benin, musical
influences and humanitarian work (UNICEF, Amnesty International etc…).
She also discussed her humble beginnings as an expatriate musician in
Europe where she was discovered by world renowned music mogul Chris
Blackwell of Island Records, prior to moving to America and becoming a US
citizen. The beloved singer displayed her high octave voice range and sang
in three different languages including her native Fon, English and French,
much to the delight of the diverse crowd. She sang her first childhood song
and own classics, as well as others by musicians that influenced her,
including James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Celia Cruz. This concert was a
success and gave us a glimpse of who Angelique Kidjo is as a human being.
Thank you Nnamdi Moweta of Radio Afrodicia (KPFK, 90.7FM) for sharing this picture.

BUY 4 Day All Weekend Festival Wristband $180
Experience the entire festival so you don’t miss a beat. This pass includes an all weekend festival wristband and walk-in tent camping in the main campground, for one person, from THU at Noon til MON at 2pm. You park your car in the lower parking lot, then walk up to the main campground with your gear. If you want to have your vehicle at your camp in the main campground, then you will need a car (or RV) pass. Thursday night festivities include 3 sets of live music and complimentary food & beer. (This price is the same early bird price as for the 2014 & 2015 festivals, but the festival & camping fees are combined, not separate).
BUY Family & Friends Package $775 (save $200)
Includes five (5) all weekend festival passes and one car pass. All five wristbands include camping, and the car pass gets one vehicle in the campground. If you need additional car passes, they can be purchased separately for $75. If you buy this package, and have friends or family arriving at different times, email us the names that you’d like each wristband to be for at will call, so you can all get in upon arrival. So, now is the time to bring friends and family
Kids 10 & Under: Free!
Little loved ones 10 and under don’t need to pay for camping or a festival wristband, as they are gratis.
BUY Kids 11-16 Years Old: $80 for the all weekend pass
Single Day Passes: The prices include walk in tent camping and festival wristband for that day and night. By 8am the next day you will need to get another pass for the day, or head on home. The price of these tickets screams out for you to come for the whole weekend (so take off work on FRI and get the 4 day pass above!).
BUY THU Only: $60
BUY FRI Only: $90
BUY SAT Only: $90
BUY SUN Only: $75
BUY Locals Only Tickets: (camping not included) $120
This festival pass is for all four days. Camping not included. (If you want to camp, there are no discounts, buy the regular tickets above). You must be a resident of Joshua Tree, Twentynine Palms, Yucca Valley, Morongo Valley or Landers. The billing address on your credit card needs to be local, or we’ll negate the sale. Limit two per person. Limited number of these tickets available, so get yours while they last.
BUY Wed Night Camping: $20 per person
Come set up early, and get settled in. If you plan to arrive on Wednesday to camp, you’ll need to purchase this WED camping option. Allows you into the campground anytime after NOON on WED. Only 4 day pass holders can purchase a Wednesday night camping pass.
BUY RV Pass (No Hook Ups) $125
If you’d like to have your RV (any vehicle over 15′ long) in the main campground (with no power or water hook ups), you will need an RV Camp Pass for the vehicle. Each person in the RV will need a festival wristband to enter the grounds. (finite number available, so reserve yours now if you know you need one)
BUY Car Pass $75
If you want to have your car at your camp in the main campground, then you need to buy a car pass for that vehicle. (Any vehicle over 15’, or any vehicle towing anything, will require an RV PASS). If you don’t need to camp with your car, then you’ll park in the lower day park lot, and walk up to the main campground with your gear. Each person in the car will need a festival wristband to enter the grounds. As the campground approaches capacity, our goal is to make the campground less of a parking lot, and more of a festive campground. And to encourage carpooling. If you are camping with friends, and want to save money, but still have a car at your camp to lock valuables in, then consider splitting one pass fee amongst a few of you. (finite number available, so reserve yours now if you know you need one)
RV Site with Hook Ups (power & water) SOLD OUT
Reserve one of the 44 RV sites with Power & Water. Each site comes with power (50amp, 30 amp, & 20amp outlets), and water. By reserving the site, you get one RV pass for your vehicle, but you can have as many friends and family camp/park on your site as you can fit on there (the space is yours to do with as you see fit). That said, every vehicle entering the campground needs a pass ($75 for a car, $125 for an RV), and every person in the campground needs a festival wristband (sold separately). The site is yours from THU at 8am til MON at Noon. (only 44 sites available, these will be sold out quickly)
More ticket options will be available soon –
single day passes, discount for ages 11-16, locals, and active military.
Kids 10 and under come in for free.
