DAARA J, DAKAR (SENEGAL), DECEMBER 24TH 2016

My husband and I are currently visiting his native Senegal from Philadelphia. On Christmas Eve, we had the opportunity to meet the world-renowned Ndongo D and Faada Freddy from The Daara J Family, right before their concert at the Daniel Sorano Theater in Dakar. Both artists are undeniably very spiritual and talented. Music is their weapon and they only use it to promote Peace & Love in the world. I was very excited to just converse with them and even while doing so, Faada Freddy couldn’t resist singing. Ndongo D was very “cool & calm” as most rappers are, and also so humble. We discussed many different topics including health and my favorite Daara J songs. Towards the end of the conversation, they both promised to put on the best show for their fans, which they accomplished to the fullest extent. The Daniel Sorano Theater was at full-compassity and tickets were sold out, the streets were also packed with cars. The concert could still be heard clearly outside by the fans who were unable to get in. The performance was nothing less than awe-inspiring, brilliant, cool, explosive and magnificent. When Daara J Family is in your city or near, you should definitely come out and show support. They are the Best! Their music is available on I-Tunes, Amazon and stores nationwide (USA).

32ND ANNUAL REGGAE ON THE RIVER, FRENCH’S CAMP (GARBERVILLE, CA), AUGUST 4TH-7TH 2016

Reggae on The River has improved much to my pleasant surprise, proving the adage; given that it is the longest running Reggae festival in US history in its 32nd year. This, per current staff, is due to the new influx of younger generations taking on organizational tasks. Unpaved roads and other areas were seemingly ready to receive thousands of campers and their vehicles, as early as Thursday morning. The “beach” area, upstream of the river, was turned into a gigantic sound system/after-party venue, which in turn contributed to its cleanliness instead of being polluted and swamped by campers. Eclectic art craft and food vendors were present as usual.

The festival featured an international line-up ranging from Dub Reggae legends Soul Syndicate to Roots Dancehall legends Sizzla Kalonji, Anthony B and Sister Carol, from Malian Blues Princess Fatoumata Diawara to Algerian Reggae-fusioned The Democratoz. Dancehall Legend Yellowman performed with his daughter K’reema. There was a plethora of promising newcomers: Protoje, Jah9, Jesse Royal, No-Maddz, New Kingston, Melekul (Sizzla’s son), Keznamdi etc…But the Festival was most certainly marked by the return of Sizzla Kalonji after an eight-year absence from the US , due to visa issues. Sizzla delivered a great performance punctuated with classic 90s and early 2000s hits, much to the delight of the crowd that sang along. Sizzla professed his gratitude to the Mateel Community organization throughout the show and post press conference, since they were solely responsible for the reactivation of his visa. And who’s better at closing than the highly-energetic/human rights activist Anthony B who literally rocked the crowd. The 32nd annual Reggae on the river was a success in reference to its organization, the live performances and attendance.

SIERRA NEVADA WORLD MUSIC FESTIVAL 2016, BOONVILLE (CA), JUNE 17TH-19TH 2016

images

The 2016 Sierra Nevada World Music Festival started on the wrong note on Friday June 17th as Lee Perry and Don Carlos’ shows were postponed until the next day due to rain. However, the weather on Saturday and Sunday was mild and sunny to the delight of the concert-goers who drove from various parts of the country to the very remote and rural area of Boonville (CA). The venue (Mendocino County Fairgrounds) was packed with novice and seasoned campers, as well as one-day concert attendees. The Festival, though Reggae-based, was very eclectic as usual and boasted musicians from North and South America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe and Asia. The format was as in the past: Shows during the day and dancehall at night with Bay area and Kingston sound systems playing classic tunes and the latest hits. There were also food, clothing and art vendors who conducted business amidst a Brazilian Carnival-like atmostphere as Samba dancers and drummers marched around the venue. The three-day festival was closed by Alpha Blondy who delivered a great performance where the message of World Peace was pronounced and clear as the crowd roared in agreement.

ANGELIQUE KIDJO, LOS ANGELES (CA), MAY 21st 2016

image

Angelique Kidjo performed differently this time around in Los Angeles, in
the more intimate setting of the Luckman Theater which was at
full-capacity. This concert was acoustic as she only utilized a guitar
player, and local drum phenomenon Magatte Sow (Djembe, Sabar & Congas) who
always tours with her when needed. Angelique Kidjo was mostly interacting
with the audience, speaking about her childhood in Benin, musical
influences and humanitarian work (UNICEF, Amnesty International etc…).
She also discussed her humble beginnings as an expatriate musician in
Europe where she was discovered by world renowned music mogul Chris
Blackwell of Island Records, prior to moving to America and becoming a US
citizen. The beloved singer displayed her high octave voice range and sang
in three different languages including her native Fon, English and French,
much to the delight of the diverse crowd. She sang her first childhood song
and own classics, as well as others by musicians that influenced her,
including James Brown, Jimi Hendrix and Celia Cruz. This concert was a
success and gave us a glimpse of who Angelique Kidjo is as a human being.

Wolof Times was in attendance of the event on May 8th where Senegalese-born Jordan Diandy (Ex-Vanguard University Basketball player) delivered a great presentation pertaining to Hip Hop in Senegal.

image

Hip Hop culture has spread throughout the globe since its creation  in 1979. This art of oral expression is very similar to TAASU which is the medium that Senegalese Griots use to relate the history of a family or a village over beats. TAASU is mainly Rap over the traditional Senegalese drum called the Sabar. The Griots perform at cultural events such as weddings or birth celebrations to name a few. Therefore, the Senegalese youth of today relate strongly to this music genre and use it to express various ideas which range from social to political issues but also just Party & Dance. There are at least 5000 Hip Hop groups in Senegal including the most popular Daara J (Reggae & Hip Hop) and solo rappers NIX the equivalent of a conscious Lil’ Wayne and Gunman Xuman with his innovative Rap news broadcast on YouTube. In France, Senegal’s colonial state, we cannot forget to mention French Senegalese rapper Booba who’s by far the most successful French language rapper in the world and has collaborated with the likes of Diddy, T-Pain, 2 Chainz and music producer Ryan Leslie. And of course, US-bred Senegalese born Akon who’s topped American and World Hip Hop & Pop charts both as a singer and as a producer, has put Senegal on the map. He’s also responsible for providing electricity to 600 million African homes through his “Lightning project”.

The event also features an art exposition that encompasses various West African countries including Senegal and Mali. Art and clothing can also be purchased at the venue.

SAN DIEGO SOUL MUSIC FESTIVAL, SAN DIEGO (CA), APRIL 9TH 2016

image

The annual San Diego Soul Music Festival presents Maze featuring Frankie Beverly, Kem and Joe this April 9, 2016.

Maze’s self-titled debut album was released by Capitol in 1977; that album (which contains the hits “Happy Feelin’s,” “While I’m Alone,” and “Lady of Magic”) went gold and earned Maze an extremely devoted following. Combining a Philadelphia soul sound with a strong appreciation of Marvin Gaye, Maze featuring Frankie Beverly was among the top R&B acts of the late ’70s and ’80s.

A Nashville-born, Detroit-based singer, songwriter, musician, and producer, Kem (born Kim Owens) overcame homelessness and addiction to become one of the most popular adult contemporary R&B artists of the 2000s and early 2010s. Kem’s third album for Motown, titled “Intimacy,” was issued in August 2010, debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, and went gold as well; the single “Why Would You Stay” was nominated for Grammy awards in the categories of Best R&B Male Performance and Best R&B Song.

Joe is an accomplished vocalist of smooth and sultry R&B productions with occasional hip-hop beats, and his extensive background in gospel music has allowed him to produce his albums as well as sing on them. A native of Georgia, Joe later moved to Opelika, Alabama; since he was the son of two preachers, he spent much time in church singing, playing guitar, and even directing the choir. Influenced early on by gospel stars like the Winans, Commissioned, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Joe grew to love soul legends Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye plus contemporary stars Bobby Brown and Keith Sweat.

2016 PAN AFRICAN FILM FESTIVAL, LOS ANGELES (CA), FEBRUARY 4TH-15TH 2016

image

The 24th Pan African Film Festival as usual boasted an interesting variety
of movies and documentaries from Africa and the Diaspora, mainstream as
well as independent. This festival is crucial in giving filmmakers and
actors from Africa and the Diaspora international exposure, especially
since it’s based in Los Angeles. The films featured annually play a key
role in informing the local masses about African History, cultures as well
as derived cultures in the Diaspora. The Black Experience is at the
forefront of the festival to keep the attendees informed about political
and social issues that affect Black Folks worldwide, so as to further
create or strengthen the bond between Africa and its diaspora. Through
documentaries such as “A Ferguson story” and “They don’t a give a damn”
which touch upon on the current state of racial relations and segregated
housing in America. As well as “Queen Nanny” which relates the story of the
powerful Jamaican national figure who helped keep her people free by
eluding and defeating the British Army in the treacherous mountains of
Jamaica. Other key movies such as “The Violin teacher” relate the
experience of a Black violin teacher, who in his own struggle of achieving
his musical dreams of being part of the Brazilian National orchestra,
helps impoverished children in the Favelas cope, strive and succeed through
learning music; Ayanda from South Africa showcases a talented cast of
actors and relates the struggle of a young girl striving to keep her
deceased father’s mechanic shop running, amidst corruption, heartbreaks and
deceit.

The Pan African Film festival also featured African Art, clothing and craft
through local and international vendors who occupied the nearby Baldwin
Hills Crenshaw Plaza mall section. These vendors were able to showcase
their art via the fashion show which was accompanied by traditional African
drumming. The drumming by local artist Kwesi Williams provided a more authentic ambiance to the event.

Veda Mela was a replica of the Bhakti fest in the Joshua Tree Desert, on a much smaller scale and more interestingly in the urban setting of Downtown Los Angeles. The festival featured Yoga workshops and sessions as well as various vendors of organic food and goods. The cozy atmosphere on the first floors of a semi-high rise building was further enhanced by a DJ who spun techno music and by the World music bands that performed. The festival was rather small but is definitely appealing to young and hip Yoga adepts as well as organic food and goods enthusiasts in the city.

Ousmane Sembène is a crucial name in the history of cinema. The first indigenous director to make films in sub–Saharan Africa, beginning in the 1960s, he is known — deservedly — as the Father of African Cinema, and yet his work is not as well known stateside as that of film pioneers from other parts of the globe. This intimate, insightful and often surprising documentary seeks to correct that. Sembène’s life story is told in admiring yet clear–eyed detail, highlighting his remarkable resourcefulness in the face of a nonexistent local film industry in his native Senegal. In Sembène’s 38–year career, he successfully made nine films, a staggeringly impressive feat given the incendiary, politically charged subjects he took on (as seen in his best–known film, 1966’s BLACK GIRL, following a Senegalese maid’s dehumanizing experience working as a maid on the glitzy French Riviera). With SEMBENE!, AFI audiences can get to know one of world cinema’s most remarkable and fascinating artists. — Beth Hanna
